The construction of the fort was started by Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1673 and was finished in 1674. The fort of Vardhangad was used as an outpost guarding the east frontier of his newly acquired territory. In the year 1800 the fort was gone in the hands of Pratinidhi who invested Mahadji Shinde's force of about 25,000 men.
